FAQs

1. What is BS3882:2015 certified topsoil and why should I care about where my topsoil has come from?

The BS3882 standards are set down by the British Standards Institute (BSI) which relate to topsoils that are imported to your garden from suppliers like us. The BS3882 standards do not relate to the topsoil in-situ in your garden. The BS3882 standards set out the requirements general purpose topsoil must meet so you can have peace of mind that the topsoil you buy is free from harmful contaminants and is nutrient rich.

Buying BS certified topsoil gives you peace of mind that the topsoil you are importing into your garden will do the job you intend it to do. You can buy cheaper, non-certified topsoil but it will inevitably be nutrient poor and may be from contaminated, untraceable sources.

2. What is PAS100 certified compost and why is it the best compost to buy for my garden?

PAS 100 is the Publicly Available Specification for Composted Materials and PAS 100 is a widely recognised standard in the organics recycling industry. PAS 100 certification ensures the green waste compost we source and sell to you has gone through the correct quality procedures and is safe for you to use in your garden.

The PAS 100 standards are extensive and suppliers have to meet strict and rigorous standards so you can rest assured the PAS 100 compost we supply is the best in the industry.

3. What is topsoil?

Topsoil is the upper layer of soil which has the highest concentration of nutrients and organic matter. Topsoil is a mixture of sand, silt, clay and broken down organic matter (dead plants, leaves, insects and twigs) which is formed over time.

4. What is compost and what is it for?

Compost is different to topsoil since it is not naturally occurring. Compost is created through the decomposition of organic matter (such as leaves and food scraps) and is much richer in nutrients than topsoil alone making it an ideal supplement for topsoil that is low in nutrients. Compost is added to topsoil to improve the fertility of it.
